Hydrofoil & Nautical

Senix ToughSonic® ultrasonic sensors measure distances to target objects or materials using “non-contact” technology that does not physically touch the target. They’re reliable, user-friendly and used in all industries throughout the world.
Their real-time, non-contact distance measurements are crucial for maintaining optimal ride height and stability in hydrofoils. ToughSonics are also used for water depth sensing and detecting corrosion in ship maintenance.

ToughSonics—The Star of "America's Cup"
Senix sensors show their mettle in the tumultuous environment of America’s Cup Racing.
First used by Oracle-BMW in 2013—the same year they took gold—ToughSonics were also later adopted in 2017 by the Bermuda winner, Emirates New Zealand.
“We drive the boat based on sensor data,” said Jose Luis Vela, Team USA Data Analyst and Instrumentation Engineer. “Foiling requires real-time information that needs to be fast and completely accurate. We selected Senix ultrasonic sensors after extensive testing in a variety of high-speed marine conditions.”
Senix is a proud member and sponsor of the International Hydrofoil Society (IHS).

How Does a Sensor Drive a Speedboat?
Candela Speedboat—a tech startup based in Sweden—uses Senix ToughSonic 14 sensors to operate their electric speedboat.
ToughSonic measures height inputs from the bottom of the boat to the water’s surface. These measurements are sent to an automated control system, which manages the boat’s takeoff, cruise, and landing. The 100% carbon fiber creation is powered by a 40 kWh lithium ion battery and 55 kW motor, and can reach speeds up to 30 nautical knots over 50 nautical miles.
The ToughSonic-traversing boat was first introduced to the public at Stockholm’s very first electric boat showcase in May 2019.

Sensors That Endure the Seven Seas
ToughSonics are top-performing sensors for fresh and sea water applications. IEC-compliant electrical interfaces prevent reversed connections and over-voltages.
For ToughSonic-100 general purpose sensors, the PUR cable and electronics are protectively potted into durable 316 stainless steel housings.
For chemical environments, choose ToughSonic-200 products, mindfully built with Kynar® housings and reinforced electronics to ensure longevity and dependability.
